Jean-Marc Dewaele is Reader in French and Applied Linguistics. His teaching and research interests are in the interdisciplinary field of applied linguistics, second language acquisition and production, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology and bilingualism. His current projects include the study of "Bilingualism and emotions" (with Dr. Aneta Pavlenko from Temple University, Philadelphia) and "The acquisition of sociolinguistic competence in the L2" (with Professor Raymond Mougeon from York University, Ontario). He has co-organised 11 panels and worskshops on these topics at international conferences.

He is member of the Executive Committees of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA), the International Association of Multilingualism, and AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics), where he is Scientific Commissions Coordinator and President of the commission to reform the organisation of scientific commissions within AILA. He was member of the Executive Committee of the Association for French Language Studies (AFLS) between 2001 en 2004.

He is a member of editorial boards of the following international refereed journals: The International Journal of Multilingualism; AILA Review; Intercultural Pragmatics ; Estudios de Sociolinguistica; EUROSLA Yearbook; Estudios de Linguistica Inglesa Aplicada.

He is General editor of AILA Review and of the AILA Book Series (John Benjamins Amsterdam - Philadelphia) (both with Professor Jasone Cenoz).
