The expertise of the academic staff covers a range of specialisms in French language, literature and culture from the Renaissance up to the present day. There are at present some 16 students enrolled for research degrees in the French Department. Joint supervisions are possible for cross-century/cross-cultural and interdisciplinary projects. Students seeking to register for the MPhil and PhD degrees apply in the first instance to the Research Degrees Admissions Tutor (Michael Temple m.temple@bbk.ac.uk), who subsequently directs them to a member of staff with appropriate research interests. We cater traditionally for part-time students, but do admit a number of full-time research students. For more information about Birkbeck Postgraduate training and research code of practice please go to the Birkbeck website http://www.bbk.ac.uk/reg/regs/pg_code .

Normally, research students register initially for the MPhil degree, and, if progress warrants it, transfer to the PhD. The MPhil degree, which requires a minimum of three years of part-time study, is examined by thesis. For the PhD degree four years of part- time study are normally required, and the thesis, usually to be written in English, has a maximum length of 100,000 words (inclusive of footnotes and appendices but exclusive of bibliography). The PhD thesis must form a distinct and original contribution to the knowledge of the subject; the MPhil thesis is required to present an ordered and critical exposition of existing knowledge. There is a viva examination for both degrees. Further information on the Regulations may be obtained from the Academic Registrar at Senate House (tel: +44 (0)207 636 8000) or via the website.
