Welcome to French at Birkbeck.
The Department of French has over the years built up a high reputation both for its language teaching and for the quality of its research. Members of the French Department undertake research in a wide range of areas: literature from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century, film, applied linguistics and contemporary history.
Students at BA level may choose a programme to suit their needs, either concentrating on French Studies, or combining French with German, Spanish, Portuguese, applied linguistics, humanities or management.
The Department offers an MA programme in Modern French Studies, as well as MPhil and PhD research supervision. Research Seminars and Public Lectures are run on a regular basis for students of Birkbeck and other Colleges.
The French Society in collaboration with the Department organises talks and such extra-curricular activities as poetry and play readings. The Department maintains close cultural and educational links with the French Institute in South Kensington.
