Jean-Marc was the president of theEuropean Second Language Association (EUROSLA) (2007-2011) and Convenor of the AILA Research Network: Multilingualism: Acquisition and Use.

He is Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Bilingualism, Reviews Editor of The International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education and Editor of the Birkbeck Studies in Applied Linguistics (BISAL). He was Co-Editor of the AILA Review between 2003 and 2006.

He is a member of editorial boards of the following international refereed journals: The International Journal of Multilingualism; Intercultural Pragmatics; Estudios de Linguistica Inglesa Aplicada; Vigo International Journal of Applied Linguistics and The Canadian Modern Language Review.

His hobbies are walking, sailing, skiing, cycling and karate; he holds a brown belt, 1st kyu, in Go Kan Ryu karate.
