Dr Gardner-Chloros awarded £1m research grant

Dr Penelope Gardner-Chloros, together with Professor Jenny Cheshire of QMUL and Professor Francoise Gadet of Paris X, has recently been successful in obtaining a bilateral Franco-British grant for approximately £1 million over four years to compare developments in contemporary London English with those occurring in Paris French. Particular attention will be paid to the influence on English and French of varieties spoken by communities of immigrant origin, including Afro-Caribbeans in the UK and French Caribbeans and Maghrebans in France.

In addition, Dr Gardner-Chloros has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford next year to carry out an interdisciplinary project on ‘Bilingual Artists: Duality, Mediation and Identity’.
