Bloomsbury Round Table on Language, Identity, and Intercultural Communication

This is an annual, international event, jointly hosted by adjacent colleges of the University of London, especially Birkbeck and the Institute of Education.

At the Round Table, researchers at different stages of their career are invited to present the latest work in the broad fields of Language, Communication and Cognition.

Each year, the event will have a specific focus, but the general theme will remain on the cultural dimensions of human communication and cognition.

This two-day conference aims to encourage multi- and inter-disciplinary exchanges on the relationship between language, identity and intercultural communication. We welcome both critical and empirical studies that examine language and identity issues in intercultural communicative contexts, e.g. study abroad, travel and tourism, workplace, family, diasporic communities, language classrooms, business and different media, e.g. speech, writing, technology-mediated, sign.  Studies with methodological innovations are particularly welcome.

Participants are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words for paper presentations by email as a Word attachment (please save in Word 97-2003) to roundtable@bbk.ac.uk by Friday 18 March 2011.

A selection of papers from the conference will be invited to apply for consideration for publication in the Applied Linguistics Review (Mouton De Gruyter,  http://www.degruyter.de/cont/imp/mouton/moutonMbwEn.cfm?rc=42772).
