Service adjustments during COVID-19

Opening hours

Birkbeck Library reopened on 14 September. To provide a safe environment to students and library staff, it operates with reduced hours and provides socially distanced study spaces. Hand sanitizers are available throughout the Library and face coverings are compulsory unless you have an exemption.

The Library’s online enquiry service is available Monday to Sunday 10am-10pm.

You can visit Birkbeck Library Monday to Thursday 2pm-9pm and Friday 2pm-6pm.

Services in the Library

  • You need to book a space to visit the Library, including for borrowing books.
  • Only current Birkbeck students and staff may use study spaces, including PCs. There are five PCs and adjustable tables in the Accessibility Centre. The Study Support rooms are currently closed.
  • There is currently no printing, photocopying or scanning available.
  • As staffing in the Library is at a minimal level, you must use our online Chat service for your enquiries.
  • The Library space is currently for individual study only.
  • You may use some of the Library PCs located on Level One to listen to your lectures.
  • You can borrow books using the self-issue machines and return books by placing them on a returns trolley outside the Library entrance.
  • You can browse the shelves but need to leave any browsed book on the Browsed Books trollies located near the stairs on each floor.

Other services

  • Returns: you may post your books back to us at: BOOK RETURNS, The Library, Birkbeck, University of London, Malet Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 7HX.
  • Birkbeck has invested in making available significant additional digital resources: over 200,000 new ebook titles will be available via the Library catalogue to help you study online.
  • The Click and Post service is available for Birkbeck students, staff and alumni who do not wish or are unable to travel to the Bloomsbury campus.
  • Reservations: you may request items which are on loan to other users and will be notified when your item is available. It may take longer than usual for an item to become available as not everyone will be able to return their books.
  • Interlibrary loans: you may request journal articles and book chapters as usual, but we cannot provide printed books via this service at present.
  • Stratford: the Weston Learning Centre is closed. There is no access to computing facilities for Birkbeck students and staff in the University Square Stratford building.
