- Databases that contain cartographic and statistical data.
Finding journal articles for Geography
The databases below can help you to find out what has been written about the subject you are researching. Some resources offer full text articles to read at your desktop. Others offer summaries (abstracts) of the articles. Many databases also offer an email alerting facility. This means that you can sign up and have tables of contents of journals sent to your email address as each issue is published.

- Agricola indexes agricultural literature and is produced by the U.S. National Agricultural Library. Subjects covered include natural resources and environment and rural and community development.
- Business Source Premier full text access to journals including titles in area studies, development studies, environmental studies, planning and regional economics. Also includes individual country profiles with political and economic information.
- GreenFILE indexing and abstracts for articles covering all aspects of human impact on the environment of individuals, corporations and local and national governments, and what can be done at each level to minimize these effects.
- International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) references to books and journal articles as far back as 1951. Subjects covered include anthropology, area studies, demography, development studies, ecology, environmental studies, globalization, human geography, policy studies and urban & rural studies.
- ISI Proceedings: Science & Technology contains details of the most significant conferences and conventions since 1990 in science and technology including agriculture, ecology, environmental sciences and geography.
- JSTOR archive providing the full text of journals from their start date up to a period of between three and five years ago. Covers anthropology, area studies, ecology, geography, population studies and public policy. Especially useful for historic information.
- Nexis UK full text access to UK and international newspapers and trade press.
- Science Citation Index references to articles in over 6,500 journals from 1970 onwards. Areas covered include agriculture, climatology, conservation, ecology, environmental sciences, forestry, geochemistry & geophysics, geographical information systems, geology, geoscience, oceanography, physical geography, remote sensing, soil science and water resources.
- ScienceDirect full text access to 2,000 Elsevier journals including titles in earth sciences, environmental sciences and geography.
- Social Sciences Citation Index references to articles in over 1,900 journals from 1970 onwards. Areas covered include anthropology, area studies, cartography, demography, development studies, economic geography, environmental studies, human geography, planning & development, political geography and urban studies.
- Zetoc search the tables of contents of many journals and conference papers held at the British Library including those in earth sciences and geography.
Finding cartographic and statistical data for Geography
The databases below can help you to find useful cartographic and statistical data. Some allow you to export data into Excel.
- Census Data provides access to UK Census of Population data from 1971-2001 including census datasets, samples of records and longitudinal and cross-sectional studies.
- Digimap offers access to contemporary and historic Ordnance Survey maps and cartographic data for the whole of Great Britain.
- Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) allows access to data from the ILO, IMF, OECD, UK Government, UN and the World Bank.

- National Travel Survey data on personal travel and changes in travel behaviour.

- Eurostat New Cronos macroeconomic and social statistics for the EU countries.
- IMF International Financial Statistics (IFS) monthly data for 32,000 time series on economic topics.
- International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Statistics data for the supply, consumption and cost of coal, electricity, gas, oil and renewables plus carbon emissions.
- International Labour Organisation (ILO) Key Indicators of the Labour Market statistics for labour force participation, employment, unemployment, education, hours of work, wages, productivity, poverty and income distribution.
- International Social Survey Programme cross-national surveys including attitudes towards the economy.
- OECD Globalisation Statistics foreign investment in the manufacturing sector.
- OECD International Development Statistics origin and types of aid and amount and composition of external debt.
- OECD International Migration Statistics foreign and immigrant populations, migration flows and naturalisations.
- OECD Main Economic Indicators annual, quarterly and monthly data for around 3,800 economic indicator including national accounts, industrial production, employment, prices, business trends and trade.
- OECD Quarterly Labour Force Statistics data for the labour force and employment by sector.
- OECD Social Expenditure Database public and private expenditure including benefits and pensions.
- UNIDO Industrial Statistics data per industrial sector for employment, wages, output and production level.
- United Nations Common Database (UNCDB) key human development indicators derived from 30 international data sources including FAO, UNCTAD, UNSD, WHO, World Bank, UNAIDS and ITU.
- World Bank World Development Indicators 630 development indicators for over 200 countries including social, economic, financial and environmental data.
