Economics books and journals in Birkbeck Library

Economics books

Use the Library catalogue to search for books.  This will tell you the location (shelfmark), the number of copies of each book and whether the book is available electronically.   However, the vast majority of books are only available in print.

To find a book in the Library, make a note of the shelfmark. Most Economics books are shelved on level 1 at 330 - 339.5.  See the list of useful shelfmarks for Economics. There is also a small collection of older books on level 3 at T.

It is important to use the Library catalogue rather than simply browsing the shelves as books may be out on loan. Books that are on loan can be reserved using the catalogue. You will need your Library barcode number (at the bottom of your College ID card).

Most books can be borrowed for 3 weeks, others for 1 week or 1 day.  Some books and photocopies of journal articles that appear on reading lists can be found in the Reading Room Collection for reference use only.  There is also a range of electronic reference books that you can access both in and outside College.

Birkbeck Collection, Stratford
If you are a Birkbeck Stratford student with a UEL card, you also have access to a dedicated collection of learning resources (the 'Birkbeck Collection') held in room 121 at University of East London (UEL) Stratford Campus Library.  Search the UEL Stratford Campus Library catalogue to find books - after your search results are displayed, select ‘Birkbeck Collection’ in the ‘Refine My Results’ section on the left. The rest of the UEL Stratford Campus Library collection can be consulted for reference purposes.

Economic journals

Electronic journals
The Library subscribes to over 25,000 electronic journals. These are available via the ejournals page.  Simply type in the name of the journal you are looking for.

Ejournals can be accessed from outside College with your IT Services username and password.  Don't forget to register your computer first by setting up a cookie.

If you don't know which journal you would like to access and just want to search by keyword(s) to see what has been written about a particular subject, the following full text ejournal resources are useful for Economics:

  • ABI/INFORM Global
Business journals including titles in economics and finance.
  • Business Source Premier
Business, economics and finance journals. Plus company information and country economic profiles.
  • JSTOR
Archive providing the full text of journals including economics, finance, mathematics and statistics. Good for historical information.
  • Nexis UK
International, national and local newspaper articles.
  • ScienceDirect
Includes articles on economics, econometrics and finance.

Print journals
Print journals are arranged alphabetically by title on level 4 of the Library. They are not for loan but articles may be photocopied.  Search for titles by using the Library catalogue and selecting a Journals Alphabetical search.  This will also give dates of holdings.
