Self-service
Over the Summer, we have upgraded our self-issue and self-return machines to RFID technology.
RFID stands for Radio-frequency identification and is a technology that uses radio waves to transfer data from an electronic tag. All of our books now have RFID tags in them.
This means that it will be easier to issue and return books using the self – service machines. You no longer have to find the barcode in the book to issue it, once you have scanned the barcode on your student card you can place the book into the slot on the machine and it will be issued to you. You don’t need to open the book at all – the tag in the book will send a signal to the self-service machine. Similarly when you return books, once you have scanned the barcode on your student card, put the books in the slot on the machine one at a time and they will be returned (you don’t need to open the book to search for the barcode anymore).
This should make the issuing and returning process simpler and quicker. We hope you will try it out.
We have also introduced automated fines payment on the self-service machines. This means that you can pay fines with cash or credit card following the simple procedures which appear on the screen.
