Birkbeck Library joins Copac

Birkbeck Library has recently uploaded its catalogue records into Copac (Consortium of Online Public Access Catalogues), a prestigious web-based catalogue which contains over 40 million bibliographic records from over 100 libraries in the UK and Ireland.

Contributing libraries range from the University of Aberdeen to the Mathematical Association to the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Library, and include the UK national libraries, the largest academic libraries and many specialist research libraries such as the Middle Temple Rare Book and Manuscript Collection. Copac also encompasses specialist databases such as the Register of Preservation Surrogates.

As well as being used by library staff as a tool for cataloguing, finding interlibrary loans and collection development, Copac can also be used as a resource discovery tool to help find rare and unique material dating from the early Middle Ages to the present day. It is very widely used by researchers and information professionals, averaging c. 600,000 searches a month, and enables users to work more efficiently by searching the contributing libraries’ catalogues in one go.

Joining this high-quality, trusted resource will bring greater visibility and prominence to Birkbeck and its library collections among the academic community and information professionals across the UK and beyond.
