"Open access to research data is an enabler of high quality research, a facilitator of innovation and safeguards good research practice."
Principle #1 - RCUK Concordate on Open Research Data

Research Councils UK are clear in the Concordat on Open Research Data that they expect that the majority of research data to be open and accessible in the future. The go on to clarify the that, "Researchers will, wherever possible, make their research data open and usable within a short and welldefined period".

RCUK are not the only major body  to support the ideals of Open Data. The Wellcome Trust (Birkbeck's largest single funder), have also signed up to this concordat.
