Access

  • Have you registered your computer by setting a cookie?
  • You have to complete an online registration form before you access the data for the first time.
  • Access ESDS

Registering for the first time

1.  After selecting your dataset, you will be asked to login with your IT Services username and password.

2. Complete the online registration form.  You must include an email address and it is recommended that you use your Birkbeck College email address as it provides verification that you are a legitimate academic user.

3. Accept the terms and conditions.

4. You will then be sent an email with a link that you need to activate. This will complete the registration process.

What does it cover?

  • Access to a wide range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative. The data can be downloaded in tables and graphs and also exported to Excel.
  • The four data headings are
  1. ESDS Government - UK large-scale government surveys including the British Crime Survey, British Social Attitudes, Family Expenditure Survey, General Lifestyle Survey and Labour Force Surveys.
  2. ESDS International - multi-nation databanks from Eurostat, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Labour Organisation (ILO),  the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United Nations and the World Bank.  Plus international social research surveys.
  3. ESDS Longitudinal - major UK surveys following individuals over time including the British Cohort Study, British Household Panel Survey, Millennium Cohort Study and National Child Development Study.
  4. ESDS Qualidata - offers digital data collections from purely qualitative and mixed methods contemporary research and UK based 'classic studies'.
