Alternative ways to login to the eLibrary from outside College
If you are unable to set the institutional cookie on your computer you can use any of the following options:
1. Log in via the Proxy Server You will need to log in here with your IT Services username and password every time you use the eLibrary
Many of our resources are available via our proxy server. The advantage of this method of access is that you do not have to load any cookies and simply enter your Birkbeck ITS username and password when requested.
In general there are very few problems with this method of access. However, if you are trying to access resources from your workplace you may find that firewall settings mean that you cannot get to our server. It is important that port 2048 is open on your network for outbound traffic. This is something that you would have to request from your IT team and is not something that we can help with.
Test the proxy server connection.
If you get a list of resources then all is well, if your browser reports that it cannot find the web page or if nothing happens then there is more than likely a problem with port 2048.
Check to see if the server is online.
