Green initiatives in the Library
Did you know that certain plants can remove up to 87% of indoor pollution within twenty-four hours? Or that aluminium cans can be recycled time and time again, saving 95% of the energy needed to make a can from raw materials?
We recycle all of our paper waste, plastic bottles and glass bottles, and send all of our used printer cartridges for recycling to SCOPE and Action Aid. We also recycle our withdrawn books and journals. We use recycled paper in all of our printers and photocopiers.
We now sell Birkbeck Library Fairtrade cotton bags - on sale at the Library Issue Desk for £1.00 each.
We have a regular Green Corner column in our weekly staff newsletter and staff are encouraged to be energy aware by turning computers off when they are not in use, and turning lights off when they are not needed. We purchase recycled stationery wherever possible and use energy efficient bulbs in all of our lights. We also have a small compost bin in our staff room!
