Birkbeck PhD and MPhil Theses

Print copies of Birkbeck PhD, MPhil and DPsych theses are kept in closed-access stores.

To request one of these theses fill in and submit the online formPlease note:

  • Requests placed on Sunday to Thursday will be available after 13:00 the next day.
  • Requests placed on Friday, Saturday or Sunday will be available after 13:00 on Monday.

The Library does not hold some PhD theses for the following subjects: Classics, German, History and Law. Theses in these subjects are sometimes held in the Libraries of the appropriate Institutes of the School of Advanced Study.

Searching for Birkbeck Theses

  • Theses on the Library catalogue: Most Birkbeck PhD and MPhil theses from 1995 onwards are on the catalogue.
  • Searching by author and title: If you know the author and/or title of a thesis, enter the author’s surname and/or a distinctive word from the title.
  • Searching by subject: To find a thesis submitted to a particular Birkbeck Department or School, enter the Department or School and theses. E.g. enter biology theses to retrieve theses submitted to the Biology department. Results can be narrowed by also adding a year to the original search, e.g. biology theses 2011.
  • Searching by year: To look for all theses held for a particular year, choose Shelfmark from the dropdown menu and enter theses/, followed by the year, e.g. theses/2001.

Early Birkbeck theses

  • If you require details of an earlier Birkbeck thesis which is not on the catalogue, refer to the national database Index to Theses : http://www.theses.com/.

Online Repository of Birkbeck Institutional Theses (aka ORBIT)

From July 2012, Birkbeck College doctoral (PhD and equivalent) courses have defaulted to submission of one digital copy and one hard copy of final thesis as standard.  Digital copies will be archived and made available through a new repository, ORBIT, to showcase the research undertaken at Birkbeck.
