The Department of Criminology offers a stimulating learning environment. Our students study at a range of levels, from access courses and undergraduate programmes and postgraduate study and PhD research. The department is based in the esteemed School of Law, providing students access to module options across Criminology and Law Departments.

Our part-time programmes, flexible timetabling and evening teaching attract people who want to combine higher education with professional and care commitments. This is our strength; students have the opportunity to learn alongside people from diverse professional experiences and backgrounds.

We build strong relationships with our students through small class sizes and personal tutoring. In the 2017 National Student Survey, 100% of Birkbeck BSc Criminology students said that they were satisfied overall, with 96% of students satisfied with the teaching on their course.

Location and Prestige

We are proud of being one of the global elite universities and part of the University of London (UoL). As well as our students graduating with University of London degree, they also have access to all UoL facilities and free membership to Student Central, the UoL student organisation.

Our city centre campus is in Bloomsbury WC1, a lively student-centred place with an esteemed history that’s home to a number of universities and other colleges of the University of London.

Pastoral & Skills Support

We offer a range of courses at different levels, from certificates and short courses, to undergraduate and postgraduate study, right up to MPhil/PhD level. Join us at the level that suits you.

We will allocate you a personal tutor who will provide you with one-to-one advice throughout the course of your degree. Dedicated learning development tutors offer workshops and 1-1 help, to support those students who want to improve their study skills, at all levels.

Social and Professional Networks

We have a great track record of students making a change through higher education, from professional roles to PhD study. To support your progression, you can participate in our year-round Criminology Careers Events; Work for Social Justice, Work for Criminal Justice and achieve support from Birkbeck alumni through our Mentoring Pathways scheme.

There is a bustling social and extra curricular calendar for students including the Criminology Research Series, Criminology Careers Events, Annual Criminology Lecture, the Law on Trial events week, Criminology Research Seminars, Criminology Careers Events, and a summer party.

We have an enviable reputation as a centre of innovative scholarship, teaching and learning.Our academic staff are recognised as experts in their fields and approach criminology using critical and multi-disciplinary approaches.  You can hear from scholars within and beyond Birkbeck at our Criminology Research Seminars. These events showcase prominent academics carrying out path-breaking research on crime, criminal justice and related themes.
