Research Degrees

Special programme features:

The 2014 Research Assessment Exercise (REF) assessed the research environment within the School of Law at Birkbeck as one that is highly conducive to produce work of international excellence. In terms of the percentage of its academic staff involved in publishing scholarly research, it was ranked by the Times Higher Education as 6th in the country (Times Higher Education REF 2014: Subject Ranking on Intensity, Section 20: Law). The School houses the editorial board for the journal most associated with the critical legal studies movement, Law and Critique, and supports a student-led journal, Birkbeck Law Review. The School of Law offers excellent training for its PhD scholars, many of whom acquire a fully rounded academic education by teaching seminars in the School’s Qualifying Law Degree and BSc Criminology and Criminal Justice. Several of our doctoral scholars go on to secure full time academic positions (Richard Joyce, Victoria Ridler, Kevin Barker).
