Which course is for me?
If you're thinking about studying law, you have a number of options to choose from - here we provide you with some guidance as to what might suit you best:
If you want an introduction to law or criminology
- Certificate of Higher Education in Legal Studies: this course gives you an excellent introduction to the study of law
- Certificate of Higher Education in Criminology: if you are interested not just in crime but in the causes of crime and how the criminal justice system responds, then this course will enable you to pursue your interest further
If you don't have a degree, and you want to practise law
- Certificate of Higher Education in Legal Methods: widely recognised as an entry qualification to the LLB, this access course will equip you with the basic skills and knowledge you need to apply to study at undergraduate level. Indeed, if you complete the award in one year, you will get a guaranteed place on our LLB, if you pass with a mark of 50 per cent or above
- Part-time University of London LLB: as the first step to becoming a lawyer, successful completion of this four-year part-time University of London LLB qualifies you to go on and pursue vocational training (LPC/BVC)
- Full-time University of London LLB: offered by evening study, successful completion of this three-year full-time University of London LLB qualifies you to go on and pursue vocational training (LPC/BVC).
If you already have a degree, and you want to practise law
- LLM qualifying course: The course is aimed at students who have already gained a first degree and want to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. Graduates of this course will be able to progress directly to the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course.
If you already have a degree, and you want to develop new critical legal skills
- LLM/MA Criminal Law and Criminal Justice: designed for students with some background knowledge in criminal law or criminal justice who are interested in exploring and developing new critical perspectives on major contemporary national and international debates
- LLM Critical Legal Practice: ideal if you work in an NGO or as a caseworker or community worker and wish to improve your qualifications, or are a practising lawyer keen to combine practical work with academic study
- LLM/MA Human Rights: designed for students with some background knowledge in human rights who are interested in exploring the major contemporary debates in the area from a critical perspective
- LLM International Economic Law, Justice and Development: unique programme, training you in the critical examination of the law, institutions and practice that constitute global and local economies
- LLM Law and Political Justice: ideal for practitioners in development who want to pursue detailed study of law and legal theory, for those seeking a research training, and for human rights activists
If you are interested in doing your own research
- MRes/Postgraduate Diploma Law: gives you the opportunity to develop your research ideas at an advanced level while enjoying the support of a taught programme
- University of London MPhil or PhD in Law: you can pursue your research either part-time or full-time
If you are a non-EU international student: you can apply for any of the following full-time degrees:
- Full-time University of London LLB: offered by evening study, successful completion of this three-year full-time University of London LLB qualifies you to go on and pursue vocational training (LPC/BVC).
