What can you expect from classes?
During the course of your time with us you will engage with staff and other students in a number of formats including lectures, seminars, tutorials, study groups, email and the web.
Lectures
- Lectures are an efficient method to impart key ideas and information to a large number of students in one and half hour slots. One of the functions of lectures is to provide a broad overview, or map of a subject area which will then be developed or filled in during seminars.
Seminars
- Seminars allow students an opportunity to clarify and discuss critically issues arising from the lectures in small group format. By contrast to lectures, students are encouraged to think about seminars as student-led and, because so many of our students work full-time during the day, you'll find discussions both dynamic and stimulating.
Group work
- In the course of your study, you may be encouraged to approach some of your seminar problems as a group exercise.
Study groups
- Students often find it useful to get together with other students living in their area to discuss work and share law materials, as well as reinforcing confidence and ideas.
Email networks
- Staff in the school are increasingly making use of email and email networks to communicate with students outside of teaching hours, via the Blackboard virtual learning environment.
- Because so many of our students work during the day, we find that students are often keen to maintain contact in this way to pose questions and arrange meetings.
