Stewart Motha, (BA LLB (Hons.); LLM; PhD), was appointed a Reader in Law at Birkbeck Law School in January 2012. He has previously taught at the University of Adelaide; Lancaster University; and at Kent Law School.

Stewart was an Associate to the Hon. Justice Margaret Beazley - Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and the Industrial Relations Court of Australia; Case Manager, Native Title Unit, Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement Inc., South Australia; and a Consultant to the Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action.

Stewart’s research is on sovereignty, violence, and legal theory. His current research is focused on the Indian Ocean region – including Australia, the Chagos Islands, Sri Lanka, migration and refugees in that region, and on post-apartheid jurisprudence. His research also examines law and aesthetics.  He is currently working on a book, Archiving Sovereignty (forthcoming with Michigan University Press).
