Research interests
Matthew Weait's research centres on the impact of law on people living with HIV and AIDS, the legal construction of responsibility, and public health.
He provides research support for a number of organizations in the HIV and AIDS sector on legal matters and is the facilitator of the UK Law and HIV/AIDS Project. He has published widely in the field of HIV and criminal law. His monograph Intimacy and Responsibility: the Criminalisation of HIV Transmission was published by Routledge-Cavendish in December 2007.
Matthew’s current research projects include:
- the legal response to asylum seekers and migrants living with HIV and AIDS
- a review of European communicable disease legislation
- the role of human rights in underpinning decent care for people with HIV and AIDS
Matthew has received external research funding for his projects from a number of sources. Recent funding includes:
- 2009/10 World Health Organization (Europe) - Communicable disease legislation in Europe (50,000 Euros).
- 2006/7 Society of Legal Scholars (2007/8 Annual Seminar – Law, Health and Rights (£8,600); Society of Legal Scholars (Small Research Grant – HIV and Human Rights (£660)).
- 2005/6 Government of Canada Faculty Research Program ($C4,400 – HIV and Human Rights); AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award (with National AIDS Trust) (£12,300 x 3 years).
- 2004/5 Economic and Social Research Council (Research Seminar Competition – HIV/AIDS and Law: Theory, Practice and Policy (£14,961)); British Academy (Overseas Conference Grant (£1,960)).
