Patricio Geovani Huilca

BA Spanish and Latin America Studies

Patricio from Riobamba, Ecuador is extremely proud of his upper second class honours degree from Birkbeck, University of London. He enrolled on the BA Spanish and Portuguese in 2009, and said that studying at the College has been an amazing experience thanks to the tutors, his classmates, and the way his mind has been opened to new things.

'The tutors are very approachable and very open,' says Patricio. 'Whenever you have a question you just need to contact one of them and they will arrange an appointment to talk to you and help you with your studies. They were always there for you.'

Patricio also enjoyed studying in a very international group. 'My classmates were a fascinating mix of people. I was amazed by the fact that there were people from all over the world at Birkbeck. I’ve met so many different people, and we’ve been able to share information about our countries and to approach our assignments drawing on our different cultural backgrounds – it really enriches our work.'

Patricio has been amazed at the way his thinking has been challenged and has changed. He comments: 'My study at Birkbeck has given me tools to interpret things in new ways. Films, literature, religion – I can see things that I simply didn’t see before. My knowledge of Latin American culture has grown immensely.'

When he graduated Patricio felt extremely proud. 'Studying in a language that is not your first language is not something that everyone does. I felt proud to be graduating with a University of London degree that would be recognised wherever I went in the world. My family were incredibly proud of me too.'

His Bachelor’s degree is just the start for Patricio. He’s now enrolled on a Master’s degree at Birkbeck and hopes to become a teacher and to go onto a PhD at Birkbeck too. 'I’ve enjoyed my time here so much. If I could continue my studies here that would be fantastic. I recommend it to everyone!'
