Bea Scheuermann

BA German and Spanish

Bea Scheuermann has exceeded her own expectations and is on course to become a teacher as a result of studying at Birkbeck, University of London. She wants to inspire others in the classroom, just as her lecturers have inspired her at Birkbeck.

Bea started her part-time BA in German and Spanish at Birkbeck aged 30. This was her first experience of university life. She studied at Birkbeck for up to three evenings per week for four years. She was employed throughout the course of her studies – first in a market research role, and then as an office manager at a recruitment agency. In September 2014, only two months after completing her course, Bea began studying for a PGCE at Goldsmiths, University of London, to become a German teacher at a secondary school.

Bea, from Germany, said: ‘The option of studying part-time was very important as I needed to work and have an income while I was studying. I had always wanted to learn Spanish, and I just wanted to be challenged intellectually. I started learning Spanish from scratch, and it was really satisfying to make such good progress. The lecturers were really inspiring.’

While studying at Birkbeck, Bea was also heavily involved in organising events for Birkbeck’s Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Society, including flamenco and salsa nights, film screenings and piñata competitions – a Mexican/Spanish tradition which involves smashing a papier-mâché object containing sweets.

Bea added: ‘I’ve met fantastic tutors and great people. I have reached heights I never thought I could thanks to my studies. Gaining a degree from Birkbeck is my biggest achievement.’
