Biography

Dr. Óscar Salgado Suárez teaches Spanish language and cultural courses at Birkbeck - University of London, Imperial College and City Lit.

He is also an Iberian Spanish linguist consultant that has been collaborating with Apple in different projects for the last five years.

Research

Research overview

My main cultural research interests are 20th Century and current Spanish visual and cultural representations with a focus on the liberating aspects of storytelling in relation to historiography, national identities and radical uses of language. In this context, I am also researching the use of humor and transgression in Spanish media culture in order to both express and critique questions of political identities and power relations.

My current research, Representing ‘Crisis’ in 21st Century Spain: Cultural Imaginaries & Ethics, investigates cultural responses to the socioeconomic and political crisis experienced in Spain between 2007 and 2015.

My language research explores two main areas: the first one relates to the exploration of Spanish Visual Culture as a strategic language methodology. The second investigates aspects of translation taken from different media as a way of deepening the knowledge of the required balance experienced in the course of the different language acquisition stages.

Teaching

I have always used cultural, social and political subjects to enable students to acquire a deeper understanding of the Spanish and Latin American worlds. I believe that language teaching can be used to introduce students to subjects which may relate to their own cultures and thus open up debates which can broaden the personal and collective experience.

 

My teaching methodology emphasizes the idea of ‘an open class’ in which all the students participate and help each other in the learning process, creating an engaging and friendly atmosphere in the stages of language acquisition. Thus, through a focus on the necessary practical skills, every group explores the inexhaustible varieties of a fascinating language and culture which never ceases to inspire all those who practice and study it.
