Process FAQs

Q. How do I make an application?

The application process is designed to be simple and progressive, you will be guided through it as you first search and then apply for a job. If you wish to know more about how to make an application prior to commencing an application then please follow the guidance for applicants.

Q. Can I send a speculative CV?

A. At present Birkbeck does not accept speculative CVs. We suggest that you check our site regularly for jobs that may interest you or better still register for a job alert.

Q. Can I make a postal application?

A. Our preference is that all applications are submitted online unless otherwise stated on the advert. If you have a disability which makes it difficult for you to apply by this method please us at humanresources@bbk.ac.uk.

Q. How can I check my application has been received?

A. You will receive a confirmation email shortly after your application is submitted.

Q. I have missed the closing date. Can I still apply?

A. Unfortunately, once the post has closed no further applications will be accepted.

Q. Do internal candidates get preference?

A. No. We use the criteria to shortlist. For most non-academic posts experience of working in Higher Education is not an essential requirement.

Q. Where will correspondence be sent to me?

A. Correspondence will be sent to the email address you registered when making your application. If you think that you should be receiving correspondence but haven't please check your spam and firewall settings. Alternatively you can always login and view your most recent emails.

If your contact details change please login, go to the section titled main details and modify your login details. If you require correspondence to be sent by means other than email please contact the recruitment team at humanresources@bbk.ac.uk. Please include your title, first name and last name and your contact phone number when communicating this request.

Q. When will I know if I have been successful? What is the timescale involved?

A. You will be informed after the initial sift of applications if you have, or have not, been selected for assessment by panel interview. The sift date is normally within 10 working days of the closing date for applications. If it is anticipated that candidates cannot be notified of the outcome of their applications within this period then the recruitment team will contact you to notify you of the delay.

Q. How do I get feedback on my application if I am unsuccessful?

A. Birkbeck keeps feedback on all applicants but may only be able to provide detailed feedback for applicants who progressed beyond the initial sift. If you wish to receive feedback on an unsuccessful application then please follow the guidance provided in the notification correspondence (login and view your most recent emails).

Q. I cannot make the interview date/time. Is it possible to re-arrange it?

A. Birkbeck endeavours to publish the date of the interview in the further information made available to applicants so that you have as much advanced notice of interview dates as can reasonably be provided. In addition the panel will try to ensure that at least 10 days notice is provided in writing to candidates invited to interview.

It is often not possible to re-arrange interview dates because of existing commitments from panel members but we may be able to accommodate changes in time. If you are unable to attend please contact humanresources@bbk.ac.uk in the first instance. Unfortunately if we are unable to reschedule your interview, and you cannot attend, we will not consider your application in absentia.

Q. When will my references be taken up?

A. For most Professional and Support jobs (Grades 1-6) references will only be taken up for the successful candidate. However, for academic, research and other Professional and Support posts (normally Grades 7-11) it is normal practice that we contact referees before interview. If you do not want the College to do this you will have the opportunity in your application form to state which referees can be contacted and when.
