Academic Related, Craft, Technical, Clerical
and Manual Staff
The College and Trade Unions agreed that each distinct (unique) job would be evaluated as opposed to benchmarking groups of jobs, then matching other staff to these benchmarks. The adoption of this approach ensured that everyone had the opportunity to contribute towards the job evaluation process.
The stages below summarise the steps in the job evaluation process.
- Members of the HR team met with Deans of Faculties and Heads of Schools and Departments to confirm the composition of staff within a given area, enabling the College to ensure that everyone is included in the process and that job titles are accurate.
- Staff were invited to attend a briefing session where HR ran through the job evaluation arrangements.
- Staff were then invited to agree a job description and person specification, against which the role was evaluated. If you undertake the same job as some of your colleagues, in order to ensure consistency and fairness, normally one job description (a ‘generic’ job description) was agreed to cover you and your colleagues.
- Your job description was then forwarded to HR for final checks prior to passing to a panel for job evaluation.
- A standard College job description document template and guidance notes were devised for this purpose.
