Gathering and reporting web site visitor data using Google Analytics
While the incorporation of Google Analytics code into a site’s page templates will automatically be included in all site creation or redevelopment projects, it is possible to add this code to existing sites, enabling the gathering and reporting of visitor data. If a School, Department or other unit within the College (the client) would like this feature added to an existing site, the procedure below should be followed.
- The client contacts the Web Manager (a.tribe@bbk.ac.uk, 020 7380 3190) to request the incorporation of Google Analytics code into an existing site. This contact should be made at least two weeks prior to the required data collection start date.
- The Web Manager and the client agree the details of the reporting that is required (for example, whether a report is required showing external visitors only), the date by which the Google Analytics data capture process should begin, and the email address(es) to which the weekly or monthly reports should be sent.
- The Web Manager or other Web Team member configures the necessary profile in Google Analytics and by the agreed date adds the appropriate code to the client’s site template(s).
- Upon receipt of the first emailed reports, the client determines whether the necessary data is being included and discusses and agrees any possible changes with the Web Manager.
- Any agreed report configuration changes are made by the Web Manager.
