Janet Roaming Service (eduroam) on XP

These instructions explain how a Birkbeck user can access the Janet Roaming Service whilst within the College. They should also work for Birkbeck users visiting other JRS member institutions. See JRS (eduroam) at Birkbeck for general information.

Select the Eduroam network

  • Right click on the Wireless Network Icon in the System tray and then select View Available Wireless Networks. (In Windows XP sometimes the dialog box opens in the background and you have to close or minimise other windows to see it.)
  • Under Choose a Wireless Network, highlight eduroam and then select Change Advanced Settings option under Related Tasks

NB if your computer's wireless interface is already connected to another network (SSID), it is sometimes more convenient to disable it here, then go to Control Panel/Network Connections, select the Wireless Network Connection, right click and select Properties

Ensure eduroam network is added to the list of Available Wireless Networks.

If the PC has previously been used to access an eduroam service these settings may already exist. If the same userid or machine was previously connected via this network it may be in the "Attempting to authenticate" state. If it does exist already, highlight it and select "Properties".

If it does not exist then select the Wireless Networks tab and then select "add" Then add Network Name (SSID): eduroam

In either case ensure settings are as below:

Configure eduroam network definition.

"Association" tab:

  • Network Name (SSID): eduroam
  • Network Authentication: WPA
  • Data Encryption: TKIP
  • You probably do not need to select these fields:
    • These fields greyed out: Network Key, Confirm Network Key, Key index (advanced)
    • This checkbox greyed out but selected: The key is provided for me automatically
    • This checkbox greyed out and not selected: This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network, wireless access ports are not used.

"Authentication" tab:

  • EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available" unselected
  • "Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable" unselected
  • "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" is usually selected but greyed out so you probably do not need to select it here. But if it is not checked, you should ensure that it is checked.

"Properties" button on the "Authentication" tab:

  • "Validate server certificate" is unchecked. (NB it needs to be checked at some other locations, but not at Birkbeck)
  • "Connect to these servers" is unchecked and blank,
  • None of the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" are checked.
  • "Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities" is unchecked
  • "Select Authentication Method:" Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
  • "Enable Fast Reconnect" is NOT checked.

"Configure" button under Select Authentication Method

  • Make sure that "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)" is NOT selected.

Commit the changes made

  • OK (one or more times)

Connect to the eduroam network

Now you have setup your connection, you should see a pop-up in the system tray saying Wireless Network Connection as shown below, click on here.

Sometimes the dialog box with the prompt in it is hidden behind another window which should be moved out of the way.

Authenticate via JRS

You should see the Enter Credentials box. Type in your username and password. Include the JRS realm in the username. Leave the Login Domain blank.

For Birkbeck users

  • Login name: username@bbk.ac.uk
  • password (your password)
  • Login Domain: (leave blank)

Non-Birkbeck users

If you are a visitor to Birkbeck and you are a member of another university or college that is in the JRS scheme you may be able to log on to eduroam at Birkbeck. You will need to use the credentials given to you by your home institution. The details are different for each participant in Janet Roaming Services. If you are able to connect to our wireless network but have problems authenticating with JRS then you will need to talk to your own IT support team. We will not be able to help.

The usual system is to have a username that is exactly the same as the one you use to log in at your own College or University, and a JRS "realm" in the username that looks a lot like the domain name of your home institution. The username@realm combination will probably look substantively like your email address but may not be exactly the same. For example, visitors from the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine should log on with Login name: username@lshtm.ac.uk
