Janet Roaming Service (eduroam) on Vista
These instructions explain how a Birkbeck user can access the Janet Roaming Service whilst within the College. They should also work for Birkbeck users visiting other JRS member institutions. See JRS (eduroam) at Birkbeck for general information. Please note that while users should test their eduroam connection at Birkbeck prior to visiting other institutions, Birkbeck users at Birkbeck should use the local wireless and mobile network, Birkbeck-WAM.
1. Click on the Start button, then open the "Control panel".

2. Select "Select Network and Internet".

3. Click on "Connect to the Internet" (under Internet Options)

4. Double click on "Wireless".

If necessary, ensure your wireless adaptor is enabled, and refresh the screen. If you still do not see eduroam in the list of available networks, move to different location.
5. Right click on "eduroam" and select properties.

Select security type "WPA-Enterprise" and encryption type " TKIP". The network authentication method should be "Protected EAP (PEAP)". On a shared computer, ensure you remove the check box to "Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network".
6. Click on the "Settings" button.

"Connect to these servers" should be unchecked.
None of the "trusted root Certification Authorities" are checked.
"Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities" is unchecked.
The "Select Authentication Method:" is Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
Other boxes, including "Enable Fast Reconnect" are left unchecked.
7. Click on "Configure", and make sure "automatically use my windows logon name and password (and domain if any)" is not checked.
8. Then Click OK as many times as needed to return to the "Connect to the Internet" screen, and highlight eduroam, and click connect. Click "Enter/Select additional logon information".

and enter your username and password as follows:
User name: username@bbk.ac.ukPassword:
Domain: left blank.

If this is accepted, you will receive the confirmation of a successful connection to eduroam.

On subsequent connections, click on start, then "connect to", then select eduroam and click on "connect" and enter your login credentials when asked.
Non-Birkbeck users
If you are a visitor to Birkbeck and you are a member of another university or college that is in the JRS scheme you may be able to log on to Eduroam at Birkbeck. You will need to use the credentials given to you by your home institution. The details are different for each participant in Janet Roaming Services. If you are able to connect to our wireless network but have problems authenticating with JRS then you will need to talk to your own IT support team. We will not be able to help.
The usual system is to have a username that is exactly the same as the one you use to log in at your own College or University, and a JRS "realm" in the username that looks a lot like the domain name of your home institution. The username@realm combination will probably look substantively like your email address but may not be exactly the same.
