FAQ: Printing, PDAs, and Firewalls
We sometimes receive questions concerning the following:
- Configuring your firewall
- Printing
- Using a PDA with the Birkbeck Wireless network
Birkbeck-WAM firewall guide
We are finding that users who are running personal firewalls, such as McAfee Personal Firewall, Norton Internet Security,
ZoneAlarm are experiencing problems registering and/or authenticating on the Birkbeck Wireless Network.
At present, the only solution available appears to be to temporarily disable the firewall until the registration or authentication process has been successfully completed. You may need to refer to the documentation or help pages supplied with your firewall software to find out how to do this.
After successfully authenticating, you would be advised to re-enable your firewall to protect yourself while on the network.
Printing
- To print to the Birkbeck printers from the WAM network,
- Click on the "Start" button then click "Run"
- In the 'Open' box, type: \\chenab.birkbeck.ac.uk\wireless\printsetup.vbs (it is best to copy and paste this command)
- In the 'Enter Network Password' box, enter your ITS username and password (your username should include the domain - eg ccsacademic\ubaaop1)
- This will silently install the printers for the ITS Workstation Rooms: MB321, B43 (Senate House), MB458, Room 3 (Clore), MB402 and MB536. Also included are the Library Open Area and Library Reference Area printers.
- Once complete you can then choose which one you wish to use when you print, and you will be charged as usual.
NB - These steps must be performed every time you connect to the WAM network

Currently hand held devices like PDAs and smart phones are unable to run the CSA health check scan.Users wishing to use their devices on the Birkbeck Wireless and Mobile network (Birkbeck-WAM), will need to have it manually registered. In order to register your device you'll need to provide the following details, along with your ITS username:
MAC/Physical address of the device.
Operating System.
Note for users who are using devices which run the Windows Mobile family of OS:
- You'll need to be using a browser which supports JavaScript.
- Some versions of Windows Mobile 2003 and 2005 are unable to deal with the way they are moved from one network to another.
- Users using devices running other OS are unaffected and should follow the "Troubleshooting guide" which is provided on the success pages.
