Android guidelines for Eduroam

Instructions for configuring Android devices for eduroam (for Birkbeck Users)

Android users are recommended to download and use the installers from the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) where possible, as described on the Wireless and Mobile Computing page. The following instructions only apply to a small number of people running old versions of Android.

Manual Eduroam configuration for old android versions.

If you are running an old version of Android you may need to configure eduroam manually. These manual instructions were prepared using Android 4.2, and there will be subtle differences in other versions.  If the example instructions below do not work for you, please contact the IT Service Desk for further advice.

1) From a home broadband, commercial wireless, mobile network or the BBK-Guest wireless network, using the Chrome web browser,  download the certificate. The certificate should automatically load, and you will be asked to give it a name. When asked, change ‘Credential use’ to ‘WiFi’ from ‘VPN and Apps’, then select done and/or OK. If you do not have a PIN or password set on your device, you will be asked to set one.

2) Select Settings, then wifi.

3) Select the "+" symbol to add a wifi network.

4) The Network SSID is eduroam.

5) Select Security, and 802.1x EAP, and for the EAP method, select TTLS.

Phase 2 authentication should be MSCHAPv2

6) Select CA certificate and select the one you just downloaded and gave a name to.

7) Leave user certificate unspecified.

8) For identity, enter your Birkbeck username in the form <username>@bbk.ac.uk eg abcde123@bbk.ac.uk. and click connect.

9) Leave anonymous identity blank.

10) Enter your Birkbeck password, and select OK.
