ITS Response to the 2009 Student Satisfaction Survey
The results of the annual student user satisfaction survey 2009, conducted between 5th March - 22nd March, were reported to the May 2009 meeting of the Communications & Information Technology Committee. The full report is available at: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/committees/former_committees/citc/20090506/08-09-20 (ITS username and password required)
The following is a list of actions that we have either carried out or are planning to undertake, which will help to address some of the comments received in the survey:
Student Email Addresses
The policy on student email has now changed, and students can either use their preferred personal email address or request College mailboxes during the enrolment process. All students are expected to maintain their contact email address within their My Birkbeck Profile, and this will be used by staff for communicating with students. 10,399 (94%) of the first year students are electing to use their personal external email address as their contact email address. Out of these around 1500 have also requested a College email address while an additional 713 are actually using their College email address as their contact email address.
Publicity of location/existence of workstation rooms
The workstation room bookings (external and internal) now appear on the timetables displayed on the Plasma/LCD displays in the main foyer. In addition to the display in the Main Building corridor of free PCs in the workstation rooms, we are planning to display live PC availability in the Helpdesk and in the corridor of the 4th floor where most of the workstations are now situated. We have also made this information available on our website. Electronic noticeboards showing room bookings are being installed at the entrance of workstation rooms.
Increased access to workstations
The establishment of a suite of workstation rooms on the 4th floor of the Main Building (Room 422, 423, 413, 412, and 411) should help students in locating available workstations. Room 402 is also being established as an additional open-access facility, accessible from within the Library.
Wireless Service Performance
In response to the increasing use of the wireless network we have upgraded the wireless management system (Campus Manager) to accommodate an increased number of registered users while a higher density of access points are being installed in various parts of the College estate to improve network performance and increase wireless coverage.
