Equipment Available for Loan

ITS provide and maintain laptops, digital cameras and a scanning facility for use by Birkbeck staff on College business.

The following equipment is available for short-term loan:

  • Three general purpose Toshiba laptops running Windows XP.
  • Two Canon digital cameras.
  • A Sony Digital camcorder.

Users may book the equipment in advance from ITS Help Desk. Laptops and cameras are available for short term loan only, normally 2 days, and may be collected from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday only.

In addition a range of assistive technology is available for loan, and these are descibed in our Disability IT Support pages. Conference telephones are also available.

Laptops

Users may not install their own software on the laptops and should remove any of their files from the laptop before returning it. Students may only borrow laptops for use in presentations taking place at Birkbeck, and need the support of their School.

During the examinations, laptops are normally reserved by the Registry for use by students with special exam requirements.

Cameras

The camera are 4Mpixels saving to CompactFlash media. Manuals for the cameras are available for those wanting to undertake more sophisticated work. Material should be removed from the memory card before return.

Scanners

The following may be booked for use at ITS Reception:

  • Hewlett-Packard Flatbed Scanner and associated software.
  • Book scanner and associated software.

The scanners provides a simple means for incorporating pictures, photographs or graphical information into a computer based document where they may be manipulated or enhanced and printed along with text on a suitable printer. The scanners also have software for optical character reading to allow text to be converted into a machine-readable form.The book scanner is designed such that scanning of books can take place without damaging the spine.

A scanner is also available in Workstation Room 402 and the Disability booth, 458a.

Anyone may use the scanner at times when no booking has been made, but the other equipment may not be available at short notice.
