Unsupported email clients

While the Birkbeck GMail service is recommended for students, and Exchange is recommended for staff, some users prefer to use unsupported or legacy email clients, and while ITS cannot provide support, there is no restriction on their use.

The following information is required in order to configure email clients which are not supported.

  • IMAP and POP servers (for reading mail)
    • imap.gmail.com (note that this must first be enabled within the GMail service).
    • pop.gmail.com
  • smtp server (for sending mail)
    • smtp.gmail.com

Your username will be requested and may need to be given in the form username@mail.bbk.ac.uk.

Please ensure you familiarise yourself with Google's recommendations when using IMAP

The outgoing Birkbeck Webmail service offered IMAP and POP, which may be used to transfer old email into a GMail mailbox. The server name (for both POP and IMAP) is imap.bbk.ac.uk.
