Configuring the Birkbeck VPN for Windows 7

Please ensure that you have read the background information about the VPN service and configuring your computer.

Go to Start Menu

Under Network and Internet click on View network status and tasks

Click on Set up a new connection or network

Click on Use my Internet connection (VPN)

Staff should enter 193.61.55.240 and students 193.61.20.50 for the Internet Address, give the connection a sensible Destination Name (e.g. Birkbeck College VPN connection) and make sure that "Don’t connect now…." is ticked. Then click Next.

Enter your ITS User name and Password, make sure the domain is set to CCSACADEMIC, and tick Remember this password if you wish, then click Create.

You will then be told that The connection is ready to use, but further changes are required, so click Close.

Click on the Internet Access Icon Windows 7 Internet Access icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Right click on the VPN connection we have just created (Birkbeck College VPN Connection in this example) and select Properties, and then select the Security Tab

From the Data encryption drop down menu select Maximum strength encryption….

Make sure Microsoft CHAP Version 2 … is the only box ticked under Allow these protocols.

Click on the Networking tab

Untick File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks. Then click on OK.

The VPN connection is now configured.

To start the connection click on the Internet Access Icon Windows 7 Internet Access icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and click on Connect.
