Guide to configuring Windows 2000 Professional for the VPN Service

Document 9.44 - December 2003

Please ensure that you have read the introduction to VPN which gives brief background to the VPN service, before configuring your computer

Go to Start > Settings > Network and Dial-up Connections

Double click on 'Make New Connection'

At the wizard's 'Welcome' screen, click next

*

Select 'Connect to a private network through the Internet' and click next

*

Select 'Automatically dial this initial connection' and then choose your usual dial-up/broadband internet connection from the drop-down list

Enter 193.61.55.240 for staff, 193.61.20.50 for students, as the IP address in the provided box

*

Select 'For all users'

*

Call the connection 'Birkbeck VPN' and click Finish

*

Now you have created the connection, there are a few more configuration tasks that need to be performed.

After you clicked 'Finish', the connection will have started up. Click on the 'Properties' button

Select the 'Options' tab, and check the box marked 'Include Windows logon domain'

Select the 'Security' tab, and choose 'Advanced', then click the 'Settings' button

*

Select 'Maximum strength encryption' from the drop-down box, and ensure that the only box checked is the one marked 'Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2). Click OK, OK.

The login box should appear again. Login using your IT Services Username and Password. The Domain is CCSACADEMIC. Then click connect.

After the connection has dialled successfully, the following message will be displayed:

You should also see an icon in the taskbar near the clock:
