Mapping your N: Drive to your PC using the VPN in Windows XP

It is possible to access from home files that you have previously stored on your N: drive whilst working within Birkbeck.

In order to do this, you must map a network drive to the College servers after you have connected using the VPN.

This document will guide you through the process of mapping the drive from a computer running Windows XP Home or Professional.

Before you can begin, you need to know where your N: drive is located. All users of ITS services have an N: drive in the following location:

\filer1.birkbeck.ac.ukUSERNAME, where username is your own ITS username

Click on Start, then right-click on My Computer and Select 'Map Network Drive'

When the Map Network Drive window appears, select N: from the drop down list, fill in the path to the location of your N: drive and check the 'Reconnect at logon' box.

When you have done this, click on 'Connect using a different user name'. When the box appears, type CCSACADEMIC\"Your ITS Username" (eg ccsacademic\lsmit123) and then your ITS password.

Click Finish in the 'Map Network Drive' window, and you should see a box pop up that tells you that the drive is connecting.

When this has completed, your N: should open in a new window. Your files will usually be stored in the 'My Documents' folder therein.

This drive will now always exist in your 'My Computer' folder, but when you are not connected to the VPN, its icon will appear as 'disconnected'. To reconnect the drive, simply double click on it when you have reconnected to the VPN.
