Netskills training materials

The College’s licence for Netskills’ internet-related training materials has been extended for another year. All members of Birkbeck are entitled to use the online resources, which include self-paced exercises for you to work through in your own time. The materials are an excellent resource, providing at least an introduction and, for the most popular subjects, a range from introductory to advanced levels. A list of topic areas is provided below.

Registering with Netskills

You should browse to the web address at the end of this article and follow the link on the right Registered users: Login (not the login link at the top right of the page). Click on the link to Institutional login and follow the process through from there. Birkbeck appears in the list of institutions twice but it does not matter which you select.

Using the materials

Once logged in you may browse materials or save a copy for later use. Courses are grouped by topic;

  • Introducing the Internet
  • Searching & Information Skills
  • Communication and Collaboration (blogging, mobile learning, social networking)
  • Teaching and Learning (e-learning, plagiarism)
  • Developing a Website (HTML, Dreamweaver, CSS)
  • Web Technologies (flash, cgi, xml)
  • Public Library Staff training

Those marked SELF PACED are particularly well-suited for students.

Course materials consist of a presentation – these are aimed at anyone teaching a course but may be of general interest – and hands-on exercises, generally provided as a Word document. Any supporting files referred to in these notes may be downloaded directly from the Netskills site.
