Seminar 2:  Wartime Citizenship: shared fate, patriotism and citizenship education

Professor Sigal Ben-Porath is author of Citizenship under Fire: Democratic Education in Times of Conflict, published in 2006 by Princeton University Press. She examines civic education in war time contexts, drawing on examples from Israel and the United States where she illustrates how conceptions of citizenship change when a country is at war and the role that education plays in sustaining and challenging these conceptions.

She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and formerly a postdoctoral fellow at the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. Policy experience includes serving on a joint Palestinian-Israeli committee, sponsored by the Peres Peace Center, working toward educational reform to support mutual recognition and peace education.

Dr Dina Kiwan, Academic Fellow and Lecturer in Citizenship Education at Birkbeck College, University of London and Programme Director for the MSc in Citizenship Studies. She is also Programme Director of ICEDC, and author of Education for Inclusive Citizenship (London and New York: Routledge).
