RGS Photography  Holdings on Latin America and the Caribbean

Group of Yaghan Indians, Tierra del Fuego
Photograhpy W.S. Barclay, c. 1880
Courtesy of the Royal Geographical Society.
The Royal Geographical Society has a particularly rich collection of photographs concerning Latin America and the Caribbean. Librarians estimate that there are between 500 and 1000 pictures of the Caribbean and thousands of Latin America. All Latin American countries are  represented. Most Photographs are listed individually on the online catalogue, except for a few exceptions such as Harry Johnston's Caribbean  pictures, for which the online catalogue only refers to the album as a whole. The collection comprises both albums and  boxes of loose photographs. They concern numerous aspects of Latin America in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. Many images are about  expeditions conducted in Latin America at the beginning of the Twentieth century. These include numerous landscapes and photographs of  indigenous populations.
A large number of  images is available for preview on the online RGS picture library.

Please note that the following list is not exhaustive, it only represents some of the highlights of the RGS large collection on Latin America an the Caribbean.
