Professor Jens Andermann
Founding director of the Iberoamerican Museum of Visual Culture on the Web. Together with Patience A. Schell (University of Manchester) and William Rowe (Birkbeck), he curated the interactive exhibition Relics and Selves: Iconographies of the National in Argentina, Brazil and Chile, 1880-1890, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. He has written extensively on Latin American film, photography, museums and visual geography, including the books The Optic of the State. Visuality and Power in Argentina and Brazil (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2007), Galerías del progreso. Museos, exposiciones y cultura visual en América Latina (with Beatriz González-Stephan, Beatriz Viterbo Editora, 2006), and Images of Power. Iconography, Culture and the State in Latin America (with William Rowe, Berghahn Books, 2005). He co-ordinated the AHRC-funded international research network Recoveries of the Real: New Argentine and Brazilian Cinema in the Global Image-World, a collaboration between Birkbeck's Centre of Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies and the Universities of Princeton, New York, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires. He is also preparing a book on modernity and the landscape in Latin America, funded by a British Academy Research Development Award.
Dr Luciana Martins
Founding director of the Centre for Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies (CILAVS), 2007-2010. Her research focuses on visual culture, and the history and philosophy of geography, with particular emphasis on visuality and travel. Among her publications are O Rio de Janeiro dos Viajantes: O Olhar Britânico, 1800-1850 (Rio de Janeiro: Jorge Zahar, 2001) and Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2005). Currently she is working on Brazilian expedition photography and documentary film in the early twentieth century, and on Andean textiles.
Dr Diane Gabrysiak
Assistant researcher. Dr Gabrysiak co-ordinates the database on Latin American photography and film in the UK.
Dr Jennifer Fraser
Assistant researcher. Dr Fraser contributed to the Relics and Selves exhibition and is currently preparing an exhibition on Peruvian national iconographies of the nineteenth century, on which she has written and published as part of her Ph.D. research.
