Andrés Lamas, Diccionario geográfico de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata (1850s)

In Argentina, Andrés Lamas, a Uruguayan exile who had participated in the struggle against Rosas and had been a member of the ephemeral 'Historico-Geographical Institute of the River Plate', organised by Bartolomé Mitre and others from their exile in Montevideo in the 1850s, became a key figure for the establishment of historical archives and collections. It was on his initiative, too, that a section of historical memorabilia was shown at the Continental Exhibition of 1882, which laid the foundations for the organisation of a permanent historical museum, opened in 1889.
