Historical paintings, often commissioned by state institutions and museums, were also enlisted to construct a visual canon of the nation's great men. This image illustrates a publication of the Argentine National Historical Museum, issued on occasion of the purchase of the original furniture of the room in Boulogne-sur-mer, France, where General San Martín, the 'hero of Independence', had died. It conveys an interesting vision of the way the museum sought to evoke history as an epic past that emanates, as a dream, from the objects on display.
