Representations of 'internal others' also served as allegories of national territory, as on this study of an 'indigenous warrior' who would represent one of Brazilīs great rivers on the pedestal of French sculptor Louis Rochetīs equestrian monument to Emperor D. Pedro I, erected in 1865. Republicans saw the statue as a provocation, since it had been on this square that Tiradentes, the 'martyr' of the 1879 insurrection against the monarchy, had been executed.
