Purpose of academic probation period

2.1 The academic probation period provides an opportunity for probationers to demonstrate that they are able to carry out the responsibilities of the job to which they have been appointed to the standard required at Birkbeck, and is determined to allow the probationer to acquire the skills required where they do not have these on appointment.

2.2 Birkbeck has the responsibility to provide the means whereby the probationer can demonstrate satisfactorily the skills and competencies that have been discussed during the appointment process.

2.3 The academic probation period provides the opportunity for the probationer to discuss their progress with their Probationary Advisor/Assistant Dean Probationer, so their progress can be acknowledged and skills and performance can be improved where necessary.
