Additional points of note
Discretion to appoint above the bottom two points of the scale
Appointments should be made on the bottom two spinal points of the grade. Only the Executive Deans, Master, Vice Master and College Secretary have discretion to appoint above the first two spinal points of the grade when chairing an appointment panel. In order to do this the panel will need to demonstrate that the candidate:
- can offer skills/competence as specified in all areas of the person specification that would put them on a par with similar role holders on the equivalent spinal point; and
- the candidate will become fully effective in the role in less than the standard incremental range of the grade; and
- that consideration has been given to internal grading relativities in the context of equity and equal pay.
For any other member of staff to make any offer above the first two spinal points, they MUST discuss this with Human Resources PRIOR to the offer being made.
Advertised salaries will exclude the discretionary points of the grade.
Current Salary Scales
The current College salary scales, including on costs, can be downloaded from: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/fin/services/payroll/salaryscales
Please use these when costing any roles you wish to submit using the Staff Expenditure form.
For guidance on costing professorial posts please contact Human Resources in the first instance.
Fixed term appointments
Please be aware that appointments for existing staff may take their continuous service beyond four years where Birkbeck is obliged to recognise the end of the fixed term status unless a reasonable justification exists. You MUST consult HR when extending or appointing staff on fixed term appointments which will give continuous service beyond four years.
