Academic posts

All requests for academic posts need to be made by completing the staff expenditure authorisation form. This form will normally be completed by the Assistant Dean within a department. The request will be forwarded to the School Manager for confirmation of funding, and then on to the Executive Dean for authorisation.

The form should then be sent to HR for validation and then this will be sent to the Master, for authorisation on behalf of the Strategic Planning Committee. The Masters office will notify the Executive Dean and HR of the outcome.

When completing the form please demonstrate the following in section 4, entitled ‘Justification’:

  • requests must demonstrate that they are in keeping with the school’s emerging strategic plan (i.e. that it is either in an area where the portfolio review is indicating potential for expansion, or it involves reallocating resource to an expanding area);
  • there is an urgent need which makes it imperative to make the requested appointment or change immediately rather than defer to the regular annual planning and resource allocation round;
  • requests relating to a post primarily concerned with delivering teaching must reference how this request contributes to meeting strategic student targets set by the School, the programmes/modules affected, staff to student ratios and teaching/contact time.

Please note that that new or replacement academic posts will normally be made at Lecturer A (Grade 7) and will be appointed on a fixed term basis unless an exceptional case is made within the justification.
