Domestic emergencies
In cases of an unexpected domestic crisis or emergency, such as fire, flood or burglary, employees may request to take time off without pay.
Approval for a period of absence due to a domestic emergency will only be given where the situation requires the employee to be absent from work. Birkbeck may request details to show that the situation is of a sufficiently serious nature as to warrant time off.
Annual leave should always be utilised for a proportion of the time off whenever possible. The employee concerned must notify his/her manager of the situation at the earliest possible opportunity and keep him/her informed. Advice on entitlements and eligibility should be sought by the manager from the Human Resources team.
