Birkbeck People Strategy

The Birkbeck People Strategy, 'Building Success Together (PDF)', covers the period August 2017 to July 2023 and sets out our vision for supporting continued excellence and success on the eve of our 200th anniversary.

As well as supporting the management of all staff in the College, we have focused our future priorities in support of the College strategies for research excellence, teaching and learning excellence, student recruitment and satisfaction, and staff and student equalities.

In developing the People Strategy we reviewed College and school priorities, listened to staff focus groups and digested staff survey results. This input was shaped into five building blocks:

  • Building College success (Block 1)
  • Building our future workforce (Block 2)
  • Building a great place to work (Block 3)
  • Building workforce diversity (Block 4)
  • Building success through recognition (Block 5).

PRIORITIES

In addition to developing a People Strategy for 2017-23, we identified the priority areas to focus on. These activities were constructed as part of our continuing commitment to listen to our stakeholders and were identified through reviewing school and professional service department annual plans.

Our HR Business Partner and HR Strategy and Policy teams actively engaged with schools and professional service directorates in taking forward the priority actions through project teams with support and representation from stakeholders.

We also ran a mini ‘pulse’ staff survey in autumn 2017 to ensure we continue to listen to our staff. After all, continuing excellence in research and teaching and learning can only achieved by ensuring we continue to recruit, retain, develop and support excellent staff. We will do this by ‘building success together’.
